not sure what you want to do, but: dtsearch makes a version of their engine for Linux. Presumably it isn't far to a desktop client. swish-e looks great and is on my to-try list. ht::dig is kinda lame, but generally works. between find, locate and grep -r I haven't come up with a need for a search client for my local system.
