Could there be some kind of debris, like carbon deposit, that could have 
changed the plug gap? 
I'd expect the piston to melt before the spark plug. Do you check the gap when 
you check the plugs between runs?

Other than the welded appearance, your symptoms sound alot like an ignition 
coil going bad. They work for a while, then start to arc internally as temp 
goes up. Then the spark deteriorates.
