Good set of questions and ideas!
It really is possible to get the timing too far advanced with the stock
slots. But not like 15 degrees or anything like that, but enough to affect
performance and maybe do some damage if everything else adds up.
Maybe some motors are worse than others since there are some variables in
flywheel keys and the component tolerances in the CDI.
This is a pure analog system that can have capacitors and resistors change
value or wander around a factory build tolerance. Those parts are usually
not any better than 5-10% tolerance.
