In order for the piston surface to be damaged by a broken piece hammering it, 
the head would also have to have a matching dent.  This definitely sounds like 
and ignition problem.

The top of the piston looked like little dents all over. The edges were 
crusty as heck; like metal had been thoroughly burnt there and barely 
reconsitituted after cooling. Ugly stuff.

The head didn't look too bad. No obvious signs of heavy damage.
