John,
While most of the folks are closer to 55", there is one very fast
car/driver I know of (from Texas...a multiple time Solo National Champ)
who's car is closer to the minimum width...If your car works well when
you get it to 50", why change?

Are you getting those wimpy measurements by measuring at the bare hub
surface? You need to measure at the outside of the wheel/tire assembly
while mounted on the car.
I got those wimpy measurements going from the outside of one tire to
the outside of the other. It has been suggested that I can improve
overall grip by widening the car. I think I can get to 50 on the front
with a spacer and I've got some room to move the back wheels out, but
I'll probably need to get a longer axle to get the rears out past 50
inches.
