You do need to make sure they match, in spec, with OEM. Otherwise they are illegal.
This makes me wonder if most of you guys use the plain aluminum ring. I've had more traditional looking head gaskets that have an aluminum ring but they also have a gasket material that seals the coolant passages. I like them much better than the plain ring which seem to leak like sieves.
