John,

The original OEM Kaw head gaskets have a totally separate copper section for the bore and then a composition material surrounding that for the water passages. A sort of white rubber coating is on the surounding water passage section.

I don't like them because I think that either the copper portion compresses more than the other part of this 2 piece arrangement or the other way around. Had water into the bore sometimes and water out the bolt holes.

The typical aftermarket discount warehouse head gaskets that have wrapped thin steel on the bore edges have always worked best for me. I keep reusing them.

There are several levels of sealer for this area also. RTV being the weakest.

The stock Kaw P/N gaskets have copper around the piston bore. I have some in
original bags.

I wish I had known that earlier Chuck. You could have sent them to me.

Most all aftermarket ones now have thin steel metal "fire bands" or O-rings wrapped around the edges of the gasket material.

The ones I've been getting are nothing but the fire band. Really lousy stuff!

The road racers I learned from (like the Elliots) told me that reused their head gaskets over and over as long as they didn't rip.

With reference to that point, do you and others put a bit of RTV on head gaskets when you install them? The manual I have says that this should be done. I've done it a few times and always ended up tearing them all to rat sh!t when I had to take them off.
