Although it doesn't sound like a crank seal to me, a good way to test the crank seals (at least on the PTO end) is to idle the motor and spray some WD-40 toward the seal. If' it's leaking, the idle will be affected.

As a starting point, I'd remove the jets just to find out their size. If they are 260's, that may be a tad rich. To begin to set idle, I'd set both mixture screws (idle and main) to 1.5 turns from bottom. That is a good starting point.

Any further than that and I'd recommend a good book on the topic.

Subject: [F500] Running Rich - What is most likely problem?

According to the previous owner's notes, the jets are 260. Weather down here right now is mid 70's, high humidity.

I will play with the idle adjustment first. Any tips for a good starting point? My big drawback is I have no tach so I can't tell what the RPMs are. I know, poor way to run a garage.

If it is the crank seal, then I will just drop in the fresh rebuilt motor I have on the shelf.
