I also saw a tube axle actually break on another car several years ago.
My machinist explained the problem to me. Said it was because the stuff was
made of cold rolled steel (weak) and had a keyway cut the entire length of
it (weaker). He's making me a new one of some material called "Superior
Shaft," and he's cutting only as much keyway as is needed.
There, I learned something new today. 8-)
