Not having read any of the other thread contributors, I would still go with
a thread insert kit (aka HeliCoil).

Subject: [F500] Stripped exhaust thread options
Hello All!!!
I have a situation that I'd like to bounce off of the
list before attempting repairs on a cylinder jug.
In the process of installing my rebuilt 494, I
discovered stripped threads on one hole of the pto
exhaust port. The original 8mm x 1.0mm threads were
apparently stripped in the past, repaired with
something in the 6mm/.25 inch range, which has now
stripped. 6mm and 1/4" bolts feel like they're
threading up, but when it's time for them to really
torque down, they just keep turning.
What's the best way to deal with this? Do another
repair with a thread smaller than the original 8mm?
Drill the hole out and tap it at 9mm x 1.0mm?
Thanks in advance for any and all assistance,
Kenneth Kirkland
