Subject: [F500] 494 Rotary valve question
Hello all!!
In the course of trying to fire my problem child 494,
a rotary valve timing question occurred to me.
With the air cleaner off of a carb, throttle wide
open, rotating the primary clutch counterclockwise as
viewed from the pto end of the crank, and looking
through the carb throat with a flashlight, which
direction should the piston be moving when the rotary
valve is open for a particular cylinder? The little
bit of 2-cycle theory I know thinks the piston should
be travelling upward to create vacuum to draw the
fuel-air mixture in from the carb. It is currently
travelling downward. Am I all wet, or does my rotary
valve have serious timing issues?
Profuse thanks for any and all assistance,
Kenneth Kirkland
