For autocross I cut the noise from my car by doing the following:
1. Wrap the pipe with header-wrap. It greatly reduces the pinging that comes off the pipe. (Some folks who know about tuning use the wrap for performance enhancement. I just wrapped the pipe to deaden the sound. I've not noticed any performance change for autox) 2. Install a silencer (like John Whitling recommended). Aaen has a nice assortment. Just keep the total exhaust length under 24", measured from the centerline of the axle. :-(

Last year when I went to the Fort Myers Tour event, we were warned about noise limits. Before making the trip, I had a muffler shop make up an automotive muffler to attach to the Aaen pipe. It didn't look pretty and weighed about 10lb. I wasn't all that concerned about performance...just wanted to make it quiet. I was amazed to find that it was no more quiet than the small Aaen silencer. It became very apparent that a LOT of the noise comes from the INTAKE!

Many people have commented about how quiet my car sounds compared to others who don't have the pipe wrapped.

The dirtiest looks we get at an autox event is when we sit in the staging line for 5 minutes with the motor running at 3k rpm. The sound even gets on my nerves. Is there any way to quiet the exhaust without sacrificing performance?
