I believe that the Dolphin cars that Jim Elder and his father built also had
some sort of dampening motor mounts.

Jeff Blumenthal uses rubber
dampening in mounting his Rotax and I have been told over the years that
rubber dampening of CVT motors is not a good idea because it misaligns
the two clutches when the motor torques over. Yet, when I look at parts
explosions of snowmobile sleds, I usually see rubber dampeners in the
motor mounts, so which way is the best the best way?

When I switched from AMW to Rotax 494, Doug Marsh did the conversion for me. He
made a real nice motor mounting plate that used 6 rubber mounts, approx 1/2
inch thick. His opinion was that frames were getting cracked by the torque of
the Rotax motors and he felt it was best to use that system. When I switched to
the 493, I could no longer use that mount because of the height of the intake.
So I placed some 1/8 inch rubber strips between the motor plate and the
chassis, hoping to reduce some vibration. Since the rubber strips are so thin
there is virtually no movement of the motor. I'm not sure if it has helped or
not, but there have yet to be any frame cracks.
