Before I would even shop for a car, I spent a year crewing for some one who
didn't know any more about F500 (F440 then) than I. I had the usual basic
automotive skills of the 60's & 70's. We learned together which accelerates
the learning curve. Together, we got him from a March Driver's school to
the Runoffs in the Fall. Cheap? No. He had to pay my way. Money well
spent. I would think so.

I think different people have very different views of what is
acceptable/tolerable performance from a vehicle. I think my standards are
very high.
It's OK though I got an education par excellence that I would not have
been able to get so quickly in any other way. A year and a half ago, I
didn't have clue one about f500 cars or 2 stroke motors, and I was
completely lost at the first event I went to when the car wouldn't run. My
knowledge base today would probably rival that of a few people that have
been driving these things for years, and I'm no longer hopelessly lost
when things go wrong. Its pretty hard to put a value or price tag on that
kind of education. 8-)
