Frankly, I personally no matter how fallaciously believe that opening the eyes is the quickest path.
I think this is correct but at the same time, it ain't for everyone. Kashmir Shaivism would agree as would the non-dual tantras like Sri Vidya, Kalachakra and paths like Mahasandi.
What is interesting to me, and I would hope others on the path, is that this is a progression: meditation with objects (e.g. "thought-objects", mantras) for entering silence, to meditation where you integrate with thought and "silence" (sanyama or vipassana), to meditation where you dissolve any method, to being able to encompass thought and silence as a non-dual event. The last two really have no method per se, but drop them.
Patanjali is just the first two.
MMY said that Guru Dev used a ruby studded Sri yantra and meditated with eyes open.
Really? I had only heard that from Sw. Rama. Interesting.
