The other paths to transcendence that MMY talks about in the SBAL
("Paths to God Realization," ~p.274) are not techniques (with the
exception of the physiological techniques path), but paths (like the
paths of intellect or of emotion), and, as you note, since the
majority of people on earth cannot follow the path of intellect or
whatever because of low levels of intellect or the demands of
householder life), that leaves the mechanical technique of TM as the
only practical way for people to gain higher states of awareness.
TM is natural, which means, that, like sleep, it is conducted by
nature. When we go to sleep, we create certain pre-conditions, a bed
in a quiet place, etc. and lie down, but the process of sleep is
natural, and so is TM, altho obviously, there are certain steps we
take which involve some slight effort to allow nature to take over
the process.
