Well, me old friend Annop Chandola once commented that the universe had done the world a favor by not letting MMY retreat into Shankaracharyahood because his leaving India to found the TM organization made him far more powerful and influential than simply becoming another Shankaracharya would have done.
And, if you think any other teacher in India would have been able to pull off what MMY has done, I'd like to sell you a river in Egypt.
