Your post reminded me of this story of Shankara, from
http://www.mihira.com/mihapr99/Jagadguru%20Sri%20Sankaracharya.html :

To make disciples understand that outer actions can never be parameters for
the inner purity of a guru, Sri Shankara once deliberately drank a glass of
liquor. Some foolish disciples immediately followed suit thinking that what
was right for a guru could not but be right for his "Sishyas". One hour
later Sri Shankara stopped before an ironsmiths shop and asking for a glass
of hot molten iron, he drank it up in a gulp. Turning to his disciples he
asked them to do likewise as what was right for him had to be right for them
too! Realising their mistake, the young men fell at his feet and begged to
be forgiven.
