Yes. I realized this when I became a student initator. I didn't get all the mantras, only up to a certain age. But also we could initiate family members who were older, and got one mantra for them all, just the one which would have come next, as I realized when I became full initiator. I have met great enlightened Swamis in India, i.e. the Maharaji of Chitrakut, who only have one mantra to give, still private still personal initiation, with - what was the buzz-word - yeah, adhikAra (personal supervision). There are certain mantras which are generally beneficial. like Raam, Namah Shivaya, Namo Narayanaya, Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya etc. (leave off the OM if you are bothered about it.) When you go to Ammaji, she will not personally select a mantra for you, you will yourself select it by telling her what your preferred deity is. The you get the standard mantra for that deity from her. Let's suppose you say your preferred deity is Shakti, and you get a Shakti mantra, but our Ayurveda experts tell you that its no good because you have aggrevated pitta? My opinion is that in this case matters of the heard are more important, and one should distinguish between higher levels, pertaining to that God/des and purely physical considerations. Does anybody believe that Ramakrishna would have abondened Kali, if he had found out that he had too much Pitta, and worshipping Her would have aggrevated it further? But he was Ramakrishna.
