I'm watching the coolest documentary on the French Planete channel about animals and their relationship with healing herbs and psychotropic substances.
It turns out that some animals (mainly birds) know exactly what substances to eat when afflicted with certain birdy diseases. The most fascinating bit showed a crow that had gotten infested with mites flying to an ashtray that contained a burning cigaretted and "fumigating" itself with the smoke. But then the progam segued into a discussion of how animals get high. Really. There were clips of cats reacting to wild catnip, monkeys reacting to pilfered alcohol (I finally understand the Chinese martial arts form "drunken monkey"), and monkeys, wild boar, and leopards seeking out the same psychotropic herb, getting majorly stoned on it, and all kicking back together, the hunt forgotten for the duration of the high. Guess it's not just humans who seek a shift in state of attention, eh?
