Let me explain this a little, given the literal example of this morning's walk to the market. On Sundays I like to go to the open marché at la Motte-Piquet/Grenelle, and to do that I have to/get to walk through the Champ de Mars. This morning there was a group of homeless guys there, standing around in a group, looking at something. I knew some of them from when I've walked the dogs here, and walked over to see what was up. A couple of the guys were trying to take care of an injured dog they had found. It had been badly beaten up and chewed upon by an obviously bigger dog. So these homeless guys were trying to bandage up the cuts, using bandages and antiseptic they all had to chip in for to buy. So I'm standing there watching this, and I notice that we're kinda blocking the sidewalk. I notice this just as two American women walk up, speaking loudly in English, obviously "going somewhere," that somewhere obviously more important than here. They didn't pause for a moment when their way was blocked. They just shoved through, pushing the homeless guys to one side, almost stepping on the injured puppy in the process. Don't get me wrong. They didn't do this out of spite or anything like that. They didn't actively *dislike* the homeless guys blocking their path. They didn't even really *see* them. These guys weren't *human* to them. They were merely an obstacle keeping them from being where they wanted to be. So they just pushed past and I doubt whether they gave another thought to these guys and what they might have been doing. The homeless guys watched them walk past and shook their heads. They didn't dislike the two women, they pitied them. Then they turned their attention back to the dog. I walked on to the market. I probably saw three or four scenes that taught me something while there. Spiritual teachers? Got 'em all around me, thanks.
