Anti Kerry people like to argue that the wounds were minor therefore Kerry is a granstanding wannabe-hero phony. Perhaps a reason for him to "try" and get awarded a purple heart was because after three, you could request a transfer away from combat.
I used to work with a guy who ended up in Viet Nam as a result of a civilian brawl that landed someone in a coma for a while. When it came to physical violence he was no shrinking violet but after 6 months of duty on a river boat all he really wanted was to get out of there. He told me how while in a hospital recuperating from shrapnel wounds to his knee, he would hobble down to a drainage ditch and rub mud onto it, hoping it would get infected and prevent him from being put back on the boat.
