Again, you seem to be using Kerry to distract from what's really going on here and now. But if you are interested in heroism and character, here are a few thoughts: One can cruelly blow up frogs with firecrackers when a kid and not be a hero. One can lie and backbite his way through (Harvard Business) school and not be a hero. Through the influence of his daddy one can get into the National Guard (!) to avoid Vietnam, and mysteriously end up AWOL even from that, and not be a hero. One can indulge in drunken driving and not be a hero. One can become President (twice) under highly suspicious circumstances (to put it very mildly) and not be a hero. One can evidently wear a wire to his debates, still losing them to his challenger, and not be a hero. One can seize on a national tragedy (which tragedy itself is highly suspect) to illegally start a war with the wrong country and not be a hero. One can capitalize on that same tragedy to curtail our civil liberties and not be a hero. One can pose in a flightsuit (!!) on a carrier-deck and prematurely announce the end of major combat ops in Iraq and not be a hero. One can arrogantly goad the enemy with a "bring it on" speech and not be a hero. One can choose to use torture, violating the Geneva Convention and endangering our own troops, and not be a hero. One can be the worst environmental president in history and not be a hero. One can consistently side with the short-term interests of the largest corporations against the long-term interests of virtually everyone else and not be a hero. One can create a totally insular "yes-man" atmosphere around himself, unresponsive to any healthy criticism or feedback, and not be a hero. One can start out with a nice surplus and turn it into the biggest deficit of all time and not be a hero. One can start out with international goodwill and squander all of it, and not be a hero.
