Years ago, when I was heavily into Star Trek, I read one of the many Star Trek novels in which at one point Spock explains to a disapproving Dr. McCoy that the entire Vulcan medical system is based on the placebo effect. Not long after that, i had to have some minor surgery. As I lay on the table being prepped, a young doctor stuck a needle into my arm for a Valium drip and started fiddling with the apparatus. I instantly felt all my muscles relax. I said, "Gee, that stuff works fast!" He smiled and said he hadn't started the Valium yet. We both chuckled at my premature response. Just as he did begin the drip, I remembered the Star Trek story and started to tell him about it. He got a very peculiar look on his face, grinned nervously, and backed away, which I thought was strange because he'd been so friendly before. Then I realized what he had heard me say as the sedative took effect was, "You know, on the planet Vulcan..."
