Yes, I do not know if the Atwill hypothesis is correct, but I do like to ask -- "Cui bono?" -- "Who benefits?" and generally find this leads to useful ideas or insights in things as diverse as 9/11, the London bombings (nicely timed to distract from the G8 issues and put the focus back on terrorism), and Christianity itself, which nicely channelled previously-rebellious, anti-Roman Messianic expectations into pro-Roman, "quisling" Messianic fervor.
