I spent 2 yrs caretaking for my girlfriend who died of cancer and went
thru the above experiences periodically, esp. near the end. Then
spent some time helping other cancer patients, but only part time,
which makes all the difference in terms of your stress level.

I found the experience incredibly stressful and spiritual. Facing
death directly and just doing whatever dreadful task has to be done in
the moment can be powerful spiritual experiences. Personally I don't
think the important thing in your situation is being awake or not, or
maintaining bliss or not, but just surrendering compassionately to
what needs to be done for your mother, not just for her physical
comfort, but more for her feeling of being loved in her final moments.
