I didn't see the segment, but I wouldn't put it
past him. He's a grandstander from away back.

However, apparently he then ripped Sean Hannity
a new one when Hannity tried to defend the federal
response.

To be a real activist journalist almost requires
some grandstanding. You wish the motivation to do
good were 100 percent pure, but it's more important
that the good be done.

The normally Bush-boot-licking, right-wing Fox
News Channel has been doing some of the very best
reporting on cable (or on TV in general, for that
matter) in this disaster. Shep Smith, who usually
does blow-dried fluff on Fox, has also been doing
a fantastic job.

Given Fox's rightward bias and their largely
right-wing audience, it's tough to make a case
that they're exaggerating the federal failure here
just for the ratings. The folks back at the anchor
desk do try to make the reports from the field
seem not quite so dire, but the reporters on the
ground just aren't going along with it, to their
great credit; and apparently the Fox brass aren't
insisting they tone it down, to their credit as
well.
