I'm going to rudely follow up on my own post, because this paragraph of Curtis' really nails it for me. I have often toyed in the past -- hopefully shifting this discussion away from Rory and to a more general discussion of people in general who run this particular "trance form" -- the idea that some people who do this do it as a kind of defense mechanism. The generic spiritual teacher grows used to all of his or her students taking everything he/she says as gospel, and then a skeptic appears. That skeptic *doesn't* take every word as if it flows from on high, and may in fact get in the teacher's face. My theory is that when this happens, *some* of these form-running teachers shift *into* a trance state, before answering. The trance state is a familiar and comforting subjective mindstate, a literal "comfort zone." And then, safely surrounded by the comfort zone trance, they answer the skeptic from "within" it. That's my theory, anyway. Tonight. In this cafe, still in Paris but leaving tomorrow for my vacation. The theory may change drastically during this vacation, or for that matter, even later tonight. :-) It will almost certainly change as I wait for my train tomorrow in Gare de Lyon.
