I'm going to rudely follow up on my own post,
because this paragraph of Curtis' really nails
it for me.

I have often toyed in the past -- hopefully
shifting this discussion away from Rory and to
a more general discussion of people in general
who run this particular "trance form" -- the
idea that some people who do this do it as a
kind of defense mechanism.

The generic spiritual teacher grows used to all
of his or her students taking everything he/she
says as gospel, and then a skeptic appears. That
skeptic *doesn't* take every word as if it flows
from on high, and may in fact get in the teacher's
face.

My theory is that when this happens, *some* of
these form-running teachers shift *into* a trance
state, before answering. The trance state is a
familiar and comforting subjective mindstate, a
literal "comfort zone." And then, safely surrounded
by the comfort zone trance, they answer the skeptic
from "within" it.

That's my theory, anyway. Tonight. In this cafe,
still in Paris but leaving tomorrow for my vacation.
The theory may change drastically during this
vacation, or for that matter, even later tonight. :-)

It will almost certainly change as I wait for my
train tomorrow in Gare de Lyon. I plan to set the
road trip off to a good start by having a drink or
two at the bar of a restaurant there in the station.

What? A "railway station bar/restaurant" NOT your
idea of a Cool Place to have a celebratory drink?
Clearly you have never been to Le Train Bleu:
