Michael, I printed out a nice copy of that alternative therapy chart,
maybe I'll frame it.
Here is a link to NCCAM at the National Institutes of Health. This
division of NIH seems to have been the brain child of Senator Tom
Harkin, because the NIH did not want it. So the results published on
this site probably try to put the best spin on alternative therapies.
It seems a lot of trials end up not being reported at all. Some have
pointed out that the number of trials started and finished is
significantly larger than the number that are published with the
results. In general these therapies do not do well under rigorous
scientific scrutiny. Quite a few of the studies have titles like
'such-and-such treatment may have so-and-so effect'. A number of
studies, such as those on massage would seem to indicate there is an
obvious effect on a person regardless of whether there is a medical
effect. Some studies on mindfulness meditation.
