Unless your definitions of "enlightenment" and "ignorance" in this 
context, at least, are literally mutually exclusive.

There may be shades of darkness even when there is light, but if you 
define "darkness" as complete absence of light, then you're still 
left with a binary definition, however useless it may prove to be.
