/Well, it's settled then: a chiropractor you once read about in a book a
few decades ago said so.
It has already been established in studies done by Herbert Benson, M.D.
that the relaxation response is not dependent on any particular word or
"mantra". Any object can be used for meditation, a sound, phrase, or image
or just being aware of being aware.
You can chant OM for decades and probably not reach enlightenment, or you
could come to a realization in nano-second - under the right conditions./

Especially if you get the wrong mantra. Mantras have specific
effects, some can calm and some can stimulate. If you're already
sluggish (kapha) then a pitta or vata reducing mantra might not be
good for you. You need a stimulating mantra. I think MMY thought
that people who got a TM (pitta reducing) mantra would just move on
to something else like they do in India. And I have mentioned before
reading a book circa 1980 by a chiropractor who said that meditation
might not be for everyone and some need to jog or walk instead.
