They don't brag about it? the google search string" quicktime mpeg-4 "file format" site:apple.com yields 432 hits on the apple.com website where they DO brag about it... http://tinyurl.com/yycsdd It was a VERY big thing for Apple given the time that it happened (1998), because there was so much negative publicity coming out about Apple's market share and so on. That a major industry standard would use a chunk of Apple technology gave them a great deal of positive PR to play with at that time. And I don't think that you can claim that a good basic design is easier to come up with than a codec. In fact, there are jillions of codecs and they can evolve in many directions. On the other hand, something as fundamental as the base file format which everything else will be put into needs to be gotten right from the start, even if it is modified substantially later on. You can't easily modify a building OR a computer program that has a poorly designed foundation. Ask Apple AND Microsoft about their legacy operating systems. Apple had to purchase NeXT in order to come up with a better OS, and MS is STILL trying to cope with poor design decisions dating back to DOS. You're a programmer. You know how important initial design decisions can be, especially when dealing with very complicated systems like MPEG-4. Why are you taking such an indefensible stance here?
