That's not a bad idea and quite possibly something we can add to the tinyMCE plugin. That is, when the list of associated content items is blank we show a default panel saying you need to associate media assets with the content your authoring. Unfortunately its not something we can add to the XStandard plugin as it only allows you to define a list of items to associate and nothing more. Mileage with other rich text editors may vary.
