Jaci,
Quickest way to build a site/subsite structure is to use the Quick Site Builder option under the Admin Tab.
This allows you to create a substructure with number of navigation nodes and pages in one easy step and place this substructure within the tree.
You may wish to have a look at this and re-use some of the code to provide an easy method to create your pre-defined substructures.
