That was pretty much my question as well, I would think that the current method is great for always having a UID, but would become a performance problem once you developed several thousand items of content.
As far as sharing records between servers, I am not sure exactly as to why this needs to be done, unless you mean for database replication. I am not very familiar with the whole syndication thing, I thought it was basically just providing an XML file containing blurbs of content with links to your site (Have I over simplified this?).

The UUID (that 35 digit thing) is unique because it combines the network card ID with the exact second the id is created. It means that servers can exchange records without risking any dupes. Very handy if you are syndicating your farCry content.
