Hi, I got some details about that by mail, forwarding them:
Version used: beta 8 H 1 boot CD
hda1 vfat 4 GB
hda2 ext2
hda3-hda5 linux swap and reiserfs
hda6 vfat 391,4 MB (FreeDOS should have come here for testing purposes)

Some of the dosfsck messages he got later:
> Cluster 8063 out of range (134217727 > 1038168). Setting to EOF.
> Reserved field in VFAT long filename slot is not 0 (but 0xff).
> Unfinished long file name ":F--:FyF:F--:FyF:F--:0--:F--:0--:0Z:F-u:0--".
> (Start may have been overwritten by
> \011\000\000\000\012\000\000\000.\013\000\000)
and quite a bit more of that sort.

I think when he said "dir c:", hda1 and not hda6 was accessed. But I wonder
why hda1 was damaged by that! If hda1 is not hidden then and there is no
hdb/c/d, then hda6 will be D: ... and I think hda6 might be past the 8 GB
boundary, but this should be okay for recent FreeDOS versions. I wonder if
he tried sys d: or something... is LBA okay for sys? I guess yes, given that
you booted with FreeDOS with LBA and FAT32 support (which should be the case
with the CD).

Ideas?

Eric.

PS: Please CC: Bogislav - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - as he is not on fd-dev.

PPS: The error looks as if the directory got overwritten by parts of
a FAT32 FAT! Should definitely be investigated further. Bogislav, how
many directory entries got damaged in total?
