... and I agree with arkady, that RAR is the best packer around.
however, for FreeDOS distribution, we use xxZIP - to remain
as compatible as possible ( there was a lot of discussion about that -
no need to repeat)
the basic issue was Aitor's question:
would you like
several *smaller* distributions
OR
a single big one
my point was, that both are too large. so give us the big one,
and let the installer sort it out.
it's slightly different for download of XKEYB/DISPLAY Vxx,
which may often change (if only a single layout),
where smaller size may be preferable.
for me personally, I don't think I will ever download a ~50MB diskimage
to install anyDOS.

Or you may use UNTGZ utility, which I already menation. Unfortunately,
I don't know if there exists 16-bit version, but if exist 16-bit GZIP, then
why not UNTGZ?
