If it's not the fonts or the font caches then the next thing to look at would
be Freetype... Try to reinstall Freetype (again, restart desktop afterwards to
be sure programs use it) and if that doesn't work find the previous version of
it and install that.

btw, did you test the rendering in a Qt/KDE program? Would be good to rule out
GTK or Pango here as well.
