I don't mean to scare you, but I had a dog who ate a towel and got 
strings wrapped around his intestines and they did surgery and were 
unable to save him.  This is my only experience with this.  We didn't 
know he had eaten the towel and noticed him losing weight.  Took him 
to the vet several times, and it took them quite a while to figure out 
what was wrong.  They attempted surgery but his intestines were too 
damaged for him to survive.

It seems you are lucky that you caught it early and know what is 
happening.  If you trust your vet, I would follow his advice.  And he 
could pass it before tomorrow.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
