Good points ..I know working in OB all the things a mom has that the baby
does not get unless going through the birth canal, which is frequently a
reason for C- sections,,
i just want the TYPHOID MARRY attitude altered if possible,,,and then
treat each cat for specific symptoms and not assume everything is FELV, i
can say for certain with one FIV and one FELV..it is my other cats that
drive up my vet bills with everything from CRF, DIABETES..IBD,,,and the
thousands of other ailments and afflictions,
I am preaching to the chiore here aren't I???

the latest stuff i've read--forgive me, those of you who want attribution,
i'll find it again one of these days, really!--it may NOT primarily be
passed in utero like it was once thought, but through mom's mucous membranes
during the birth PROCESS, and during the nursing/cleaning/nurturing days of
tinybabyhood--this might help explain why we're seeing so many mixed
litters, and moms who are negative with babies who test positive at one
point or another... in a colony environment, that'd make sense..... i also
wonder if, since a litter can have as many dads as kittens, if there's an
immune-response thing that's contributed by dad.....

i just really wonder how many are just actually born with it or acquire it
from their moms and are unable to throw the virus, We have finally come to
realize how hard it is to get FIV and now it is time to really get some
truthful answers about FELV....

i don't think that reliable research on that exists.... (remember, hard
to do research on a population you regularly treat with euthanasia.)

what i do know, is that there are no, zip, zilch, nada DOCUMENTED cases of
truly negative cats (ie, cats who were tested at appropriate intervals using
more than just the snap test, more than once) who were VACCINATED ever
turning positive from living closely with truly positive cats (see above
description....) i have heard some anecdotal stories where vaccinated cats
have caught FeLV from the positive, but there's never been any proof that
the cat was actually negative to start with, just as you say.

if anyone can find me a documented case, i'll be unhappy, but i'd still
like to see it--i find it very interesting that after all these years, no
one's been able to find such documentation......

any reliable statistics on how many cats tested negative for FELV,,and
then after living with positive kitties converted i would sure like to
know, i just have this gut feeling that it is so very very few. i think
frequently one cat may be positive and the others never tested unless they
become ill and wow,,,they are positive,,and yet they may have been
positive all their lives but just asymptomatic, Those are the valuable
statistics..those are the statistics that cause healthy FELV cats to be
PTS ( killed).... most of us here seem to have the experience of no
transmission in adult cats, The only way to be sure is if a cat was once
negative,,,,,,,,THEN
became infected,,,and positive, Kelly
