The 18 gallon ones are easy to change out. I just use a skill saw to cut
the u-opening. My cats have never been concerned about how neat it is.
Evaluate the jumping ability of your cats to decide how high up the box you
need to go. Dixie is so athletic that I haven't cut a hole for her yet.
My mother used to put a very heavy drum liner in her box then put the litter
in it. She thought it made the box easier to clean. An idea. I don't use
one.
An after thought: If you go this route consider leaving the RM boxes open
and in the sun for a couple of days if they smell like plastic (depends on
how the store kept them). The odor can be a real turnoff for cats (and
people).

Marylyn,
What do you cut them with?
I went to a rescuer's house that had HUGE long skinny rectangular
rubbermaid type things as litter boxes. I think the only problem
would be changing them out completely as they probably held several
hundred pounds of litter each.
I need to do something about my situation though.
Not nearly enough litterboxes for all my cats, and if I had the
recommended 1 litterbox per cat + 1 I'd have to have a whole room with
nothing but litterboxes in it.

You can mix the crystals with the clay--I do and it works pretty good.
Dixie gets the little round pearls in the pads of her paws so we are
trying
the chips. Also consider using a Rubbermaid or knock off storage box for
his litter box (no lid please). I use the 18 gallon or larger ones and
cut
a u-shaped hole for the cat to walk in. More room, less concentration
and
high walls for any difficulties hitting the litter. I love them. I
started
using them when Ebony was about 18 years old and was having trouble
"getting
down."

Try probiotics (health food store or order Fastrack). Also have him
checked
for a UTI. This is not natural.

Cassidy, my new FeLV+, has very aromatic pee! I had to use clay litter
because he didn't understand the crystals, but even so, I think when I
get
him switched to crystals, it will still be unbearable. Baking soda does
not
cover this smell. He's been neutered, and he's not marking, it's just out
of
his litter box. Is there anything I can feed him? Any product that could
help? I couldn't even sleep last night because our house is unreasonably
stinky! I love this guy, but I'm going to be embarrassed to let anyone
over!
Even my husband, who works around manure every day, was sickened by the
smell!
