If they have a lot of fleas, I've never attributed that to anything more
than that, the fleas are all running around on them dying so they get
itchy/scratchy/crazed for a bit.  Not sure if this is the same as what your
friend is describing but I can see how someone might describe what we've
seen that way--though I'd say an hour, not hours.
