Hi Melissa
Good point...Not all vets are the same...Actually in my case it was a 2nd vet in the clinic that save the lives of the 2 that I have...They were feral cats that were trapped to bring them in but she had been feeding them all summer and intended to keep them inside from now on...She may have gotten the free service by saying they were strays even though she was to take them back herself...not sure....

Don't get me wrong...I am very much for low cost S/N...cutting down on the homless population would probably do more for getting rid of FeLV+ than anything else and S/N is the only humane way to do that.

The thing is if you use one of these services you should have it cleared with the vet what if...
In my case all 3 apeared to be healthy when they were trapped...The one that was PTS had diarrhea but I
she was eating and running around with the rest of them....Thats one thing I would like to know..Did it have a fever or was it just a result of being trapped and scared...But in this case they won't talk to me...
And it seems (they say) they had the right to not talk to me as well as PTS...

Anyway its something to be aware of and check out...don't asume that your rights and the operation itself are the same quality as they would be if you were paying $100 for it....I lost one years ago at a low cost vet that did 8 cats at the same time, assembly line style...My cat was dead from the anestheasa before he even touch her with the scalple...Too much anestheasa ????  He said it was the 1st time that happened and he had been doing it that way for years...An expensive operation they probably would have given a small dose 1st and listened for hart problems before giving the full dose...I doubt they did that....

In my ramblings here I just realized this was the 2nd time that I have been bitten by a low cost spay...
Maybe thats why I am running on...But you get the idea...right ??

Were these cats brought in as pets or strays? That makes a difference, in that if they are brought in as strays, the hospital has more say in whether their illness or trauma is too severe to treat. With a pet, if the animal starts to crash, they have to perform all possible lifesaving techniques and cannot euthanize without permission. But with a stray, there's no one to ask. Now, it gets tricky when a rescue is involved and funding things like the spay/neuter, and tricky with chronic incurable illnesses when the animal is presented as symptomatic. Some special needs rescues won't even take a symptomatic cat.

Everyone has to draw the line somewhere and it's tough to quantify "suffering." That is what makes euthanasia a controversial topic.

So, while it's fair to be wary, I would be interested in having more facts before making any conclusions. Also, I don't think it's fair to lump all low-cost spay/neuter places into the same category--if the one who euthanized the kitten is really just a bad egg, it's still an isolated case and does not necessarily reflect on all the other unrelated clinics.
