I wouldn't adopt to them at all knowing they were going to adopt, barely get the new kitty and existing kitty acclimated and then leave town. This would be hard on the existing cat and the new one. Cats don't like the routine changed, and going out of town is a big deal in itself, but to throw in a new cat before you leave is inconsiderate to their existing pet.
