The actual rules regarding succession and family registers are only as
important to the setting as we make them, because Naruto is distinctly
_not_ set in feudal Japan, and Kishimoto hasn't given us much to work
with. As such, this is the last i will speak on this topic.]

Also, there's some evidence that it has happened at least once in the
past -- remember when they speculated that the sharingan and byakugan
were related? That's the most likely method as to how.
[That all depends on how you decide that the Sharingan came about. It
has been stated in canon that the Uchiha are descended from they
Hyuuga. How the Sharingan evolved from the Byakugan could be the
subject of countless fics, as canon gives us nothing on the subject.]
