aren't most directories optional if they are only relevant for a
specific subsystem?

sharing /usr with other machines is ok, using a shared /usr from another
machine if the current one is using a package manager is what leads to
problems.

well, i see another reason: /var/spool is a temporary location, for
things that are intended to be moved later, and deleted after
processing.

not all mailclients move mail from /var/spool/mail to the users
homedirectory. hence i believe that /var/mail was created because its
use differs from /var/spool in that the users inbox resides there
permanently.

hmm, i just found that the whole linux annex makes the fhs a bit hard to
read. especially because most readers will be linux users, so they
always have to look in two places.

would it make sense to move the linux specific comments to the main
sections they relate to?

then when i go look up say /boot, everything about it is on one place,
and i have the note what is linux specific right there.

greetings, martin.
