I agree with the findings on Simple Green, I have used it to cut the smell
of Ram and Billy fleeces and mold and mildew. I don't like the smell either.
However, the Basic G from Shaklee worked, no smell, etc. Not everyone has
access to this product and Simple Green is available in the local store.
hence the reference to it. Many of my customers request non-perfumed
detergents to process their fleeces. All the products mentioned have worked.
One of the contributors said they might have to wash the fleece 3 times to
get the grease out. I've used Dawn, Tide, ERA, Orvus, etc. Most of the time
they will work. However, I've had
fleeces I've washed 5 or more times and these products didn't cut the grease
using 4 cups or more in 10 gal soft water, 140 degrees or hotter, 5-8 lbs
of fiber..
Each time you wash a fleece you move it around. The cut ends MAY felt. With
the superfine merinos this happens more often than not. So far!!! the
Shaklee products have worked in two washings, 5-6 pounds of fiber to 10 gal
of soft, hot (140 degrees) of water, soak 1 hr. Amway does it too.
If you're processing your fleece at home, you can live with a TINY bit of
grease in the fiber. When the fiber moves on to a commercial carding machine
that is turning at XXX RPM. The fiber is seriously stressed. If there is any
remaining grease in the fiber it will cause neps and noils. The fibers need
to be grease free in order to slide by one another during the carding
process. Without sliding, the neps and noils develop.
I get many fleeces that have nice batts included in them for processing. The
owners had just a bit of grease in the fiber and the resulting batts from
their drum carders were sticky and wouldn't attenuate.
I thank Gary Zielinger for the tip he gave me. It worked and I wanted to
share the information with all of you. Getting the grease out is the most
frustrating part of processing. The fun part is the dyeing, color blending,
fiber blending, spinning, creating projects and getting to meet so many
fiber folks at the shows we do. What a wonderful family we are!!
