I made some winter boot liner socks for my husband that looked like they were solid felt--probably not the same thing since my husband's boot liners were only about 1/4 inch thick. How I did it was by knitting a pair of HUGE socks out of merino pencil roving on huge needles (for me--size 11 or so), then fulling them via washing machine and dryer until they couldn't shrink any further. Of course I'd made a swatch and fulled it to get my gauge to figure the sock dimensions from! It was amazing (and a bit daunting) to have a 30 st by 50 row swatch shrink down into virtual nothingness. The resulting fulled material *looks* like felt, there's no evidence of the knitted fabric left. After wearing a few times, the fabric molded exactly to his feet and he says they are the most comfortable and warmest boot liners ever. I made him 5 pairs and he wants more (wears them as slippers around the house, too). I did find that the top edges rippled a bit unless I sewed them together using perle cotton--the edges seem to behave a bit differently than the middles of the piece. Sewing the top edges together makes them behave more like middles. I used my generic sock pattern with a square heel flap; I've used it for so long I don't truly remember where I got it.
