The leaves can be preserved for a while using wax paper. We did this as
kids.

Put some leaves between 2 layers of waxed paper. Put the wax paper leaf
sandwich between 2 layers of thick paper bags and iron the bags. The wax
melts and coats the leaves, preserving the colors for a time. (They do
eventually brown though.)
Then you can keep them between the paper or remove them carefully. You
may want to protect your ironing board with a couple of extra layers of
paper in case the wax comes through.
Experiment with iron temperature and duration of pressure.
