Years ago when our youngest was in the Waldorf kindergarten, I made one of their dolls (as a "horrible" person, I made a male Paul Bunyan figure that was judged to be scary) - and added thick black hair and beard. I no longer have Paul around, but think I took the yarn and made long loops - short stitch through the "scalp" and a long loop, again through the "scalp" until I had the hair rather thick. After all was secure, I think I cut the loops. That said, Paul DID have male pattern baldness so his hair was only around the back of his head and on the beard.
